Achieving New Year's Resolutions
Brad Sugar’s Formula for Change is:Dissatisfaction x Vision + First Steps > Resistance
New Year’s Resolutions. We all have them, but why do so many of us not see them through to completion?
What’s this got to do with Brad’s formula for change?
How does this help in my business?
Let’s think about a weight loss resolution, which is one of the most popular for the New Year.
Most weight loss is carried out by giving you the first steps. First steps are the what you have to do in order to accomplish your goal. This is great, BUT these are simply not enough. First Steps are only part of the equation and will not by themselves be strong enough to overcome the Resistance you have to change.
Have you noticed that you start doing new things with all good intentions, but then after a short while go back to how things were? This is because you only worked on a small part of change, you only worked on a small part of you.
We are very clear in Sales Training that what you have to do is appeal to a person’s emotion. We all fool ourselves that we made our purchase based on a logical decision, yet we know this is simply our justification for the purchase of the item we want.
To sell ourselves on the change we want we have to find the emotion. The two elements here are Dis-satisfaction and Vision. We need to get quite clear on what we are unhappy with, why we are unhappy with it, and what the consequences are of not changing.
We also need to get quite clear on what we want to change to, why that would be great and the consequences of achieving the change we desire.
For me, weight change is an indicator of health. I am unhappy with my weight because it makes me uncomfortable in my clothes, means I run out of breath doing simple things like climbing stairs, and increases the pain in my lower back. If I don’t change I am very likely to have a heart attack in the not too distant future and almost assuredly die younger than if I was healthy.
The vision is that I can play golf without pain, do up my shoes with comfort and eventually play with my grandchildren (a few years away I hope). By being healthy I will live to a ripe old age to keep enjoying the things I want to enjoy.
Knowing where I am and where I want to be enable me to make the logical plan, to work out what I have to do, the First Steps.
Getting clear on my Dis-satisfaction and Vision give me the motivating reasons to take ACTION on my plan.
Now go and apply all of this to your business, your goal setting and planning, and the rest of your life.
